Having completed his bachelor’s degree in commerce he joined garment factory as worker and earned something for his basic needs so humble he was. He was offered the leading role by director Vasanth in his movie Aasai in 1995 but he rejected the offer stating that he has no interest in acting. His first movie was Nerkku Ner directed by Vasanth and produced by Maniratnam who first suggested his stage name as Surya
He has already bagged a lot of awards like Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor, ITFA award for the best actor for his role in Goutham Menon’s Kaakha Kaakha. It is said that he has already completed around 69 movies in his career.
