Poompatta is one of the oldest Malayalam language movies directed by BK Pottakkad featuring Sridevi, Prema, Sankaradi and TR Omana in the leading roles. The movie which was released in 1971 has cinematography done by N. Karthikeyan and edited by NR Natarajan. It’s an apt example for the old techniques and the background scored made in the past for creating a movie in India. It has been considered as one of the masterpieces of Sridevi in her career.
The lyrics in the movie was penned down by Kocheri and music was composed by Devarajan one of the finest musicians in the past. Sridevi was awarded the best child artist award given by Kerala State government, for her performance in this film. It says the story of an orphan girl called Sarada whose mother died due an illness. Following the death of her mother she was brought up by her stepmother who ill-treated the little girl.
It gives the present generation some details on how the people lived past the dress codes and cultuaral backgrounds of the society. A society where education was far from the common man in the society. A society which driven by a lot of traditional rituals.
